We
had another beautiful day for touring.
Much
to our surprise, it turned out to be a holiday weekend.
New Brunswick is celebrating a birthday and its residents are enjoying a
provincial holiday for the next few days.
The
Route
We
traveled 159 miles to Calais. The route was simple … east on US-2 from
Skowhegan to Brewer (just south of Bangor), then east on ME-9 to Calais. We’re
a stone’s throw from the Canadian border.
Stuff
of Note
Two Rivers Campground is really well
maintained and run. The laundry room was close to our site and provided a good
example. The appliances were clean and in good condition. The room layout was
convenient.
Today’s
trip felt like a journey into the wilderness. Towns were far apart. We drove
many miles where there were no homes, farms, services or people visible … just
forests.
We
saw a procession of about 100 motorcycles near Brewster. It was escorted by
police. We don’t know why.
Verizon started sending roaming charge warnings as we approached Calais. We turned off our cell phones and will leave them off until we return to the U.S. We’ll look into disposable phones tomorrow.
Tonight
We’re
staying at Keene’s Lake Family Campground
near Calais. It offers a nice family environment. The restrooms aren't particularly clean,
but we brought our own.

Tomorrow
We’re
crossing into New Brunswick tomorrow.
Email
and blog postings will happen as we are able to make wi-fi connections.
Bruce has many fond memories of Maine. I believe that the late Sen. Margaret Chase smith (no relation) was from Skowhegan.. could be wrong, though
