We
were up early today and off on a fairly long drive to Sault Ste. Marie.
Packing up at Dreany Haven Campground |
The
Route
Talk
about easy. We started out on TCH-17W, drove 287 miles and stopped in Sault
Ste. Marie.
We saw a lot of these |
Along
the Way
The
weather was mild, mostly sunny and perfect for sightseeing.
We
passed Lake Nipissing, Sudbury, Blind River, Thessalon and Bruce Mines. The
terrain changed quite a bit as we neared Sudbury.
Sudbury offers an excellent example of the treasures that can be found in many communities. The Copper Cliff area is in the heart of the nickle mining industry. The tallest chimney in the western hemisphere (called Superstack) is part of the Copper Cliff smelter ... and, it's just a small part of the Sudbury story.

Scenes along the way |
Bruce
Mines is known for copper. It was the second copper mining town in North
America. Its first mine opened in 1846 and the last was decommissioned in 1944.
Observations
We’ve
been in Canada for three weeks and have only mentioned Tim Hortons once (yesterday). If you didn’t know, Tim Hortons is HUGE in Canada. There are
franchises all over and there have been lines at every store we’ve visited.
Some locations have so much business they have multiple drive-thru lanes. We think
they make very good coffee ... maybe that explains it.
We’ve
seen almost no police presence on the highways.
There
are very few highways north of us.
The
Campground
We
stopped at Glenview RV Park &
Campground. There are only a few campers here. It’s very pleasant. Their internet is great.

Tomorrow
We’re
heading for Wawa (honest). The route travels along Lake Superior and through Lake
Superior Provincial Park.
