Day 38 – Drumheller, AB to Lake Louise, AB

A whole lot of things changed today.

The Weather
The nights have been getting progressively colder for the past week. We’ve used the furnace every night.

We awoke to a very gray day. It was cold and there was a stiff breeze. It rained intermittently and the temperature dropped to 45°F around noon. Some sun broke through in the late afternoon, warming the day and our spirits a little.

The Route
Our 215 mile trip went smoothly. We took AB-9 west to TCH-1 just east of Calgary, then TCH-1 to Lake Louise.

The Terrain
This leg of the trip definitely completed the transition from plains to mountains. We are now camping in the Canadian Rockies. The mountaintops look like they were dusted with powdered sugar. It turns out this early snowfall arrived over the past two days.

Here are some highlights:
Leaving Drumheller
Canada Olympic Park in Calgary
TCH-1 north of Calgary
Mountains appear as we approach Canmore.
Approaching Banff National Park
Park entrance
Waterfall outside Banff
Early snowfall in the mountains
Wildlife overpass
Approaching Lake Louise exit

The Campground
We’re staying at the Lake Louise Campground in the Banff National Park. It’s rustic, very pretty and located at the foot of a mountain. The sites only provide electric service.

They enforce a “BARE” Campsite Program. Only hard-sided camping vehicles are allowed in our area. They have an area surrounded by an electric fence for tents and soft-sided campers. Why?  About a dozen grizzly bears and several black bears reside in and travel through the area.
Site #93

Moraine Lake
We went to view Moraine Lake after getting set-up in the campground. The lake and the lodge are picturesque. They provide a large parking area. It was packed full even though it was late in the day and late in the touring season.
Moraine Lake
There's some rough footing for photographers.

We saw two people fall into the lake as they were making their way across the logs. Brrr!
